Cultural Safety and Awareness

This document will support you to identify and pursue your personal choices and determinations in an environment of cultural safety and awareness.

  • Our values, beliefs and attitudes are often influenced by our family and upbringing; and traditionally develop from our culture, heritage and spirituality.

  • Our individual choices and interests play an important role in our lives. We respect who you are, and are committed to supporting the values most important to you.

  • Our staff are here to support and encourage you to actively engage in a wide variety of community activities that enable you to lead a fulfilled life.

  • You have the right to access inclusive, supportive and non￾discriminatory services within the community, free from any bias based on your personal
    preferences or position.

  • Cultural safety and awareness is demonstrated via an open, respectful and inclusive attitude of another’s values and beliefs, and in providing a level of support which enables you to practice, enjoy and truly celebrate your life choices.

  • We appreciate that we are part of a diverse community and that each of us will have widely differing beliefs, opinions and goals. We aim to be supportive of your specific values system, and empower your cultural wellbeing.

  • Your “values system” may include your religious or spiritual beliefs, and may
encompass a daily prayer practice or time for reflection.

  • You may value the celebration of significant spiritual festivals and calendar events, and the observation of specific cultural and religious holy days.

  • Cultural safety is particularly important to our Indigenous Community, due to their deep spiritual connection to their Country, Ancestors, Elders and
Ceremonies. They have the right to have their sense of identity and heritage
    celebrated and preserved.

  • Cultural awareness is also demonstrated by inclusivity, and the breaking down of barriers that might otherwise prevent community access and participation.
